Inge Home added to National Register of Historic Places

William Inge's boyhood home at 514 N. 4th Street in Independence, KS, owned by the William Inge Festival, has been added to the National Register of Historic Places. The home is used by visiting artists working with the William Inge Center for the Arts and Independence Community College, for the annual William Inge Theater Festival, and other local events.

The house greatly influenced the stories of Bill Inge, whose family lived there from 1914 to 1930.

“This house is the most significant resource associated with William Inge,” states the application to the Kansas State Historical Society and presented by the KSHS to a national review board. “While he wrote his award-winning works elsewhere, no other place in Inge’s life influenced him as much as the house–and town–in which he was raised.”

With this prestigious designation, the Inge Foundation has launched an extensive renovation and restoration plan for the house. The modern siding has been removed and the original exterior woodwork has been revealed, to be repainted and repaired. In addition, heating and cooling systems have been replaced and updated. The plan ultimately includes repair of window sashes, refurbishment of the staircase and flooring, repairs to the roof and walls, and, of course, sprucing up the welcoming wrap-around front porch.

“We invite the public to contribute to this project,” Foundation President Liz Moore said. “It is an exciting cause with tangible and visible achievements donors can see and be proud of. Anyone who loves the works of William Inge and values his legacy  can feel good about supporting this effort.”

The house is still used for artist residencies and will be open for tours during the Inge Festival May 22-25.
