Making a Choice with Michael Allen

Stella Adler once said, “In your choice lies your talent.” To make a choice and play an action on the line is the most basic thing for an actor to do and yet sometimes the hardest.   The workshop will get back to the basics and use scenes drawn from modern and classical texts to examine different choices and actions in an exploration of the words and the meaning behind them.  How does environment and context shape intent and action?  How does an actor bring choices to the table for the director to use in rehearsal?  How does the actor remain flexible enough to play not only in a performance but even an audition.  How does an actor unlock their choice and their talent?

Inventing Shakespeare with Michael Allen

There is a reason why you go to see different people play Hamlet or Macbeth… or any great Shakespearean role.  We all know the story of Shakespeare’s plays, but it is THE ACTOR that brings them to life. The workshop examines the trap of “Fatal Fluency” in performing Shakespeare and addresses feeling constrained by the verse in performance rather than emboldened by it.  No audience comes to see a recital. No actor is the same. How does a modern actor make it seem like they are inventing the 400 year old text for the first time? The workshop examines the use of verse, cesuras, clusters and structure to unleash the language of the bard and make it personal.  Participants will get the text in their mouths and learn certain filters and guideposts to pass the text through in order to unlock it in performance. They will leave with some tools and new ways to attack any role in the Bard’s cannon and make it their own.  (texts will be provided but participants can also bring in any piece they want to work on as well)
