Mark Valdez

Mark Valdez is an artist, cultural organizer, and consultant who partners with communities, organizations, civic institutions, and others, using theater and creative tools to address community needs and to lift up community voices. Current directing projects include Roe by Lisa Loomer and Evita, by Rice/Weber. Upcoming projects for which Mark is both the writer and director include: Exiled in America (a 5-city, devised performance piece exploring life in resident motels); Chato’s Kitchen, based on Gary Soto’s book for children, co-commissioned by Child’s Play Theatre and the New Jersey Performing Arts Center; and #latinxox, a Trinity Rep commission to create a performance piece with and for Rhode Island’s Latinx community. Mark is the recipient of various awards and prizes, including the 2019 Johnson Fellowship for Community Transformation awarded by Americans for the Arts.
